High Holy Days

Taking Stock

During the High Holy Days we take stock of the past year and evaluate our lives. This workshop explores how the Days of Awe, through celebrations, rituals and prayers, help us with the difficult task of making changes within ourselves for the better.

Making Observances Relevant

This workshop's purpose is to bring meaning to participants' observances and enhance their High Holy Days experience in the synagogue and at home.

Topics Covered

  • S'lichot: The significance of this High Holy Day preparation
  • T'shuvah:  The concept of repentance and new beginnings: the process of fixing one’s relationship with others and with God
  • The history and meanings of the major prayers found in the Machzor (prayer book used during the High Holy Days)
  • Modern Jewish thinkers' commentary on the High Holy Days
  • Exploring major concepts and vocabulary for the modern sensibility
  • Family activities during the High Holy Days
